Blind poetry and tango in Edinburgh ...
Scotish folk as being one of the celtic-breton music styles I knew from my youth but I did not really expect 'tango argentino' in the highlands.
All right, I know: Edinburgh is not actually part of the 'highlands' but a stronghold of scotish (enjoyable and fascinating) culture. This culture not always is readily comprehensible for any non island and non scotish person ... perhaps the location of Edinburgh's milonga just above the pub 'Blind Poet' has an inner meaning that general foreign [read: non-scotish] tangueras y tangueros do not understand at 'primera vista'. It's a wonderfull room nicely decorated by the society's members with a nice wooden floor.
Well, I did not really yet understand the connection but I have to report some phantastic tango experience I was able to undergo in the beginning of june 2003 at this very location. Not only the introduction to the scene was very friendly [thanks to Toby from Edinburgh Tango Society] but people on the sunday evening milonga I was able to attend were as similar open minded and welcoming. Therefore only very few pictures I was able to take that night ... the rest of the time I was busy dancing!
One last thing I would like to recommand to you if you happen to be able to travel to this wonderfull milonga in Edinburgh: Do not just only be on time but be an hour early ... and have a meal downstairs at the same location! You won't expect this as Scotland being part of Britain with a rather doubtfull reputation on 'cuisine' but I did not only have one good meal down there. And: Try out their 'Malbec' red wine from Argentina! They have two different sizes of glasses available: go for the big one right ahead!
